Students in Mrs. Steinstra’s Gr. 5 class dissected their classroom garbage, up close! We divided contents into 5 different categories; Compost, Recyclables, Reusable, Food Waste, and Garbage. The students were shocked to see how much food waste there was, along with how many items could be re-used. This lesson has a great impact on the students and often brings up questions such as, “Why did someone throw away an apple after one bite”? “What can I use instead of Ziploc bags in my lunch”? A deep discussion of the classrooms waste habits took place. What will the students learn in next weeks Beyond Recycling Lesson?!
Stinky Lesson at Robson School
