Recycled Bookmarks

This year’s Beyond Recycling classes are very keen to use art as a medium for reducing their ecological footprint, especially in the waste category. After diverting household waste into art, Mme Lapierre’s class kept this theme going by making new paper out of old paper.
Homemade recycled paper is a fun, straightforward activity – albeit a wet one! The first step is to rip scrap paper into small pieces and put in the blender with water. Once it reaches a smoothie-like consistency, the mixture is filtered, shaped and rolled before being left out to dry for a few days. Many of the students chose to turn their recycled paper into bookmarks by cutting them down and decorating with drawings and tassels.
Papermaking was a favourite lesson for many. But it’s no surprise that students enjoy putting their learning into hands-on action!
