On the Tour
Your Landfill field trip:
- Where do things when we throw them away? Join staff from the CSRD for a tour of your local landfill to find out. This is also an opportunity for students to ask questions and learn about what kinds of things are destined for the landfill and what things can be diverted through recycling and product stewardship.
- The tour is approximately 40-50 min.
- Teachers could also coordinate stops at your local Bottle depot and Recycling or Reuse Center to create a full-day field trip. Coordination of these stops would need to be arranged separately. Shoot Melissa an email if you need ideas on how to coordinate this at futuremakers@wildsight.ca
- There is walking on this trip please ensure all students have sturdy footwear (closed-toe shoes)

What a highlight! We all really enjoyed this trip and everyone learned something. Graham first toured us through the recycling facilities and explained how it is things are sorted, where they go and how they are processed. We continued on to the scale and talked about how much things cost to dispose. We viewed that mattress and carset recycling programs and learned what they do in order to keep these items out of the landfill. Next we got to learn about the birds of prey program. Mandy introduced us to her birds Chica and Queenie and we learned about their role at the landfill. We walked up to the landfill and Graham showed us where the last 10 years worth of garbage was. Then showed us where waste is currently being placed. This was a great trip. We learned so much and had the opportunity to ask any questions that we had.
This was really interesting. Graham is very knowledgeable and there is so much more going on there than most people realize. We learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes at the landfill.
