This week’s Beyond Recycling lesson centred on the idea that humans are not apart from nature, but a part OF nature. We investigated the complexities of natural ecosystems and headed outside to consider our place in the web of life. The class stood in a circle and played a game of connections. The first player named an animal and then passed our "Earth ball" to the next player who had to pick another animal, plant or resource that was somehow connected to the last. By the end of the game, we had created quite a tangled web of bears, bees, rivers, humans, chickens, grass, owls, robins, flies and sunshine! We considered what would happen to this complex system if one of its components was removed and we began to realize what interdependence is all about! By caring for nature, we care for ourselves!
