The students at Rossland Summit School were amazed at this hands-on activity in this weeks Beyond Recycling lesson, Sustainability. Their classroom floor was converted into a world map, however the countries were all odd sizes. This represented the population of each country according to its size on the floor. For example, North America was very small in size, where as Asia was the largest country on the map. After comparing population vs. energy consumption the students visually saw how 80% of the worlds resources are used by 20% of the worlds population! This lead to a great class discussion on topics such as "is this fair?" and "how does this happen?" and most importantly: "is the world going to be able to sustain this consumption into the future?" What a fun, hands on lesson, which teaches some important and real global issues.
