Revelstoke Community Garden Food Field Trip

Posted on

Beyond Recycling students went on a walking tour to the Community Garden at the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre. Students were given a tour of the Community Garden by Jenn Meens, a volunteer with the Revelstoke Local Foods Initiative. Students learned about the fruit forest, raised vegetable beds as well as the composting and watering systems. After the tour, students rolled up their sleeves and got dirty working in the garden. Students contributed to the garden by weeding, composting leaves, prepping the raised beds for planting, planting strawberry plants and herbs as well as watering. Students were thrilled to get out outside, learn about their community, and have a hands-on experience contributing to the Community Garden. Through this experience, students were given many ideas for their Ecochallenge next week. Students will be participating in a Real Food Potluck where they will be brining a food item to share with the class that is local, organic, natural or wild.
