Last week, Ms. Elias’ Beyond Recycling class had an eye-opening discussion about the World’s water supply. Through hands-on demonstrations, the class was able to visualize just how precious clean water truly is. Despite the fact that our planet is covered by 70% water, only a tiny fraction of that water is usable to humans and animals as fresh, clean water. That tiny drop needs to be divided up for domestic, industrial and agricultural uses. In Castlegar, we are pretty used to the seemingly limitless access to clean water, but our water demos gave us a new perspective of what it would be like trying to fulfil these basic needs in an area of water scarcity. The students decided we are extremely lucky to live in an area of water abundance and we have a responsibility to keep that water clean and use it wisely.
