After learning about product lifecycle and how much one-time plastic we use in our day to day lives, the students from Mr. Brauer’s grade 5/6 class at Yaqan Nukiy school did a project to make beeswax wrap. Beeswax wrap can be used to wrap snacks in instead of using plastic wrap. It is easy to wash in soapy water, hang dry and then use again and again.
We re-purposed the fabric from some cotton curtains to make squares for the wrap. We used beeswax from Swan Valley Honey, a local honey producer in the Creston Valley, as well as sap (to make the beeswax sticky) that we collected from some of the forest trees in the school yard. We also used jojoba oil, which comes from the seed of the jojoba plant, which is native to arid areas of Mexico, Arizona, California and Utah.
