This week, the Grade 4 students at Kinnaird Elementary took a good hard look at the "True Cost of Food". We discussed the concepts of food miles, eating local, eating foods in season, and choosing organic foods. We compared the impacts of conventionally produced packaged foods to local, ‘real food’ and had some great discussion around the ways the students could make better food choices at home. The conversation was so great, we had to extend the lesson into a second block! We shared stories about our gardens at home, shopping with our families at local farmer’s markets and fruit stands, raising backyard chickens and choosing local fruit in season. We wrapped up the class by taking home our Earth Day sunflower seedlings!
