History of Waste

On November 27, the students of Ms. Gadbois’ grade 5 class stepped way back in time to look at how the amount and type of waste created by humans have changed over time. With students dressed up as historic guests spanning from hunter gatherers to present day humans, we learned what kind of waste was created during these times as well as during the time of ancient farmers, ancient Greece, the industrial revolution, and the mid-1900’s. The students were shocked to learn that present day humans create ~2.1kg of waste/day…a whole kg more than just 50 years ago!

Passing an object around the classroom that weighed 2.1kg really drove home that the average human can create A LOT of garbage, and hopefully this will cause the students to re-think their use of disposable products.
