The students at Twin Rivers Elementary School in Castlegar celebrated the end of Beyond Recycling with a fantastic potluck. Gr 5/6 students were excited to bring in a dish to share that encompassed the 5 N’s, or as many as they could. The 5 N’s are (in no particular order) Now, Near, Nutritious, Natural and Naked – with packaging that is. One of the students exclaimed “Its like a game, try to win by getting all 5 N’s” and yes, if we can choose healthy food for our bodies and our planet, then we all win! The wonderful spread included seasonal asparagus and rhubarb muffins and jams. Local deer, lamb and chicken meat, pickles and apple juice preserves, edible flowers, dehydrated fruit, and artisan breads. Students took turns introducing their dish, and how many N’s they were able to achieve. We also talked about where/if we purchased our food and the process to prepare the dish. Everyone felt very proud of what they contributed and learned a lot about real food and how we can make better choices by re-thinking the way we eat. We also had a fun trivia game while we enjoyed our food. Students took turns picking a Beyond Recycling lesson question out of the hat, and the student to get it correct got a round of applause and to pick again. This was a great way to wrap up the learning from a full program of Beyond Recycling, and also to re-visit all of the amazing lessons, games, field trips and activities that were enjoyed. Such a fun and engaging final lesson! Thank you Mme Russell’s students for an amazing school year! Jess
