It was a rainy Earth Day this year, but Mrs. Hendry’s grade 5/6 class visited the Ootischenia Landfill and Brilliant Recycling Centre, seeing where our waste goes when we throw it "away". The landfill is trying very hard to become a resource recovery centre, aiming for no waste in the future, and the recycling centre really pushed the message that if it’s between throwing it out or getting it to the recycling centre, the centre is more than equipped to handle all the recyclables out there. The landfill tour really stressed the importance of knowing or learning about all the alternatives to throwing things away, and the recycling centre really stressed making sure your recycling is clean (for otherwise the whole bag is considered contaminated and bound for the landfill). Wet, but very worthwhile.
